I’ve gotten a few questions involving overprints in my inbox. What are overprints? How do you make an overprint? So I wanted to share a quick explanation of what overprints are and how to make them in Illustrator. Quick and easy.

Hello, questions about the overprint. Will the rip read this as halftone or will it be two solid colors overlapping?
    Thanks!

Hi Sonia! That depends. If you have any sort of tint, transparency, or gradient on a spot color then it will print with halftones. If you have a solid color, it will print solid with no halftones. This applies if you are printing them as an overprint or not. Thanks for the question!!

Hi Casey, thank you so much for replying to my comment.
I see, for some reason i was thinking on the press. To use two colors to achieve three. Not sure if i am making any sense.
Once again thank you and keep the good work! 🙂

Hi Bruce. Yes its kind of the same in Photoshop but when you’re doing overprints in photoshop its best to use spot channels and have your colors overlap there. I’ll try to do a vid on that sometime in the future. Thanks!
